Robert G. Schiffer, AICP, Principal of Cambridge Systematics, Inc., was the only transportation consultant invited to the inaugural workshop on the American Long Distance Personal Travel Data & Modeling Program. The workshop on Multimodal Inter‐Regional Passenger Travel Demand was held on January 13-14, 2010, at the University of Maryland. This new Federal program is designed to focus on developing data, models, and tools that address long-distance travel flows. Such information will be made available to states and coalitions for planning future transportation corridor needs such as high speed and intercity rail and highways. States would also use these data to update their own statewide, urban, and regional travel models.
In addition to Mr. Schiffer, the expert panel included a number of well known academics in the field, representatives from research organizations, and spokespersons for several transportation-related associations. “I felt honored to serve in this capacity and participate in a discussion of the Draft Research Roadmap for the FHWA Office of Highway Policy Information,” said Schiffer.
