Travel Model Validation Practices Peer Exchange
December 2008, White Paper

A Peer Exchange on Travel Model Validation Practices was held in Washington, D.C. on May 9, 2008. The general objective of the Peer Exchange, which was sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration Travel Model Improvement Program, was to provide background information and guidance for the improvement of travel model validation practices. The white paper includes examples of practices to clarify, demonstrate, and underscore the comments and recommendations of Peer Exchange participants. more

A Snapshot of Travel Modeling Activities
August 2008, Report

In March 2008, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and contractor staff visited five Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO) with proven track records of using travel model results to support the transportation planning process. A summary report documenting the findings of the visits is now available from the FHWA. The report summarizes how travel demand models and the resulting travel forecasts have been used in the regional planning process and how the travel demand models are used to address emerging issues. The report also summarizes the levels of support the regions have dedicated to the travel forecasting process and their plans for further enhancing the travel forecasting process. more

Traveler Response to Transportation System Changes, Chapter 17
August 2007, Report

Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Report 95: Traveler Response to Transportation System Changes, Chapter 17 - Transit-Oriented Development explores the transit-oriented development (TOD) land use strategy and its transportation impacts in terms of regional context, land use mix, and primary transit mode. This report is part of TCRP’s Traveler Response to Transportation System Changes Handbook series. The objective of the Handbook is to equip members of the transportation profession with a comprehensive, readily accessible, interpretive documentation of results and experience obtained across the United States and elsewhere. more

Metropolitan Travel Forecasting: Current Practice and Future Direction
July 2007, Report

The Transportation Research Board has released Special Report No. 288, Metropolitan Travel Forecasting: Current Practice and Future Direction, which examines metropolitan travel forecasting models that provide public officials with information to make informed decisions on major transportation system investments and policies. The report explores what improvements may be needed to the models and how Federal, state, and local agencies can achieve them.

Bay Area/California High-Speed Rail Ridership and Revenue Forecasting Study
2006, Reports

The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CAHSRA), working in partnership with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), is developing a statewide model to support the evaluation of high-speed rail alternatives throughout the State of California. The proposed system, with bullet trains operating at speeds of up to 220 mph, would provide service from San Francisco, Oakland, and Sacramento in the north, through the Central Valley, to Los Angeles and San Diego in the south. This work will be used to develop a new Financing Plan for the CAHSRA and also will be used to support future planning activities of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). Three draft reports which provide background to the model development and level of service assumptions are available:

Traffic Analysis Toolbox

Traffic Analysis Toolbox Volume I: Traffic Analysis Tools Primer
July 2004, Report

This primer provides an overview of traffic analysis tools in the transportation analysis process. Different categories of traffic analysis tools are defined, and the challenges and limitations of using traffic analysis tools is presented. A specific comparison between Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) analysis and traffic simulation-based analysis is provided. Criteria for selecting the appropriate type of traffic analysis tool are described. This is the first volume in a series of volumes in the Traffic Analysis Toolbox. The other volumes currently in the Traffic Analysis Toolbox are: Volume II: Decision Support Methodology for Selecting Traffic Analysis Tools and Volume III: Guidelines for Applying Traffic Microsimulation Modeling Software. more

Traffic Analysis Toolbox Volume II: Decision Support Methodology for Selecting Traffic Analysis Tools
July 2004, Report

The purpose of this Decision Support Methodology for Selecting Traffic Analysis Tools is to provide an overview of the role of traffic analysis tools in transportation analyses and to present a detailed methodology for selecting the appropriate tool for the job at hand. The report describes the selection process including selection criteria and worksheets that can be used in applying the selection process. more

Traffic Analysis Toolbox Volume III: Guidelines for Applying Traffic Microsimulation Modeling Software
July 2004, Report

Guidelines for Applying Traffic Microsimulation Modeling Software provides a recommended process for using traffic simulation software in transportation analyses. The guidelines provide the reader with a seven-step process that begins with project scope and ends with the final project report. It is hoped that these guidelines will assist the transportation community in creating a more consistent process in the use of traffic simulation software. more

Transit Customers – Who, Why, Where, and How: A Market Analysis of the San Mateo County Transit District
April 2004, Report

This study reports the efforts of the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) to understand customer attitudes and perceptions and create market segments that reflect and account for traveler attitudes. The study uses a Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach along with cluster analysis to identify market segments in the population that can be targeted for new services to be offered by SamTrans. In addition, the results of the market segmentation are applied spatially so that SamTrans can customize their response to address individual market areas. more
