Pontis® BMS Development, Support, and Implementation
Kansas Department of Transportation

interface flow

Objective

To be more effective and productive in managing bridge data, planning, and operations, the Kansas Department of Transportation (DOT) selected the Pontis Bridge Management System. Having developed Pontis for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Cambridge Systematics was the logical choice to provide technical services to assure efficient delivery of the Pontis system with customized applications.

Cambridge Systematics played a number of key roles. For the Kansas DOT, we:

Project Challenge

It was important to the Kansas DOT to implement Pontis to improve the Agency’s bridge management processes. By implementing and customizing the Pontis database, the Agency was able to implement a single database for storing data previously stored in a combination of mainframe and Microsoft Access databases. The new reports and forms developed for the Kansas DOT improved upon the Agency’s bridge reporting capabilities, while supporting existing agency business processes. In addition, it was important to the Agency to be able to synchronize bridge data with planning data stored in the Agency’s CANSYS database.

Our Approach

We applied extensive Pontis experience to design and manage an efficient implementation. First, we collected system requirements and developed a customized Oracle database. We incorporated 100 Agency-specific fields used in analysis by Kansas DOT. Next, Cambridge Systematics programmed an extensive set of triggers and stored procedures for calculating National Bridge Inventory (NBI) data items that use the custom data fields. We then migrated Kansas DOT legacy bridge data from existing bridge systems into the database.

Cambridge Systematics developed custom reports and forms to address a number of bridge management challenges. One example is the new Kansas DOT Bridge Inspection Form (BIF).

Productivity Improvements

Once Pontis was installed, the Kansas DOT looked to Cambridge Systematics to create a data entry process for batch entry of inspection data. We developed an applet that allows Kansas DOT personnel to enter data and perform data validation checks in a manner that is consistent with other Agency business practices.

In a cooperative effort with the Kansas DOT and the Exor Corporation, Cambridge Systematics designed and developed a custom data synchronization interface between the Kansas DOT BMS database and the CANSYS system developed for Kansas DOT by Exor.
